Mr. August James Friedrich (Aug), of Bethel Park, PA passed away at the age of 97 on January 1, 2023 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Aug was born on December 16, 1925 and grew up in Bloomfield, PA and then Homewood, PA with his late mother Martina Burke Friedrich and his late sister Dolores (Dolly) Friedrich Kelly. Family was very important to him and as a result, he and Dolly were the best of friends and when she married the late Robert E. Kelly Sr., they also became close friends. He was married to the late Mary Eileen (Dwyer) Friedrich, loving and supporting her for 67 years. Aug graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1943 and Duquesne University in 1949 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, however he spent his entire working career as a self- taught Chemical Engineer. Between high school and college, he fought in World War II as a tail gunner on a B24 Liberator bomber for the US Army Airforce 747 Bomb Squadron stationed in Italy.
Aug is survived by his six sons and one daughter, and their spouses: Michael and Joyce, Daniel and Susan, Kevin and Tammy, James and Julie, Joanne and Walter Massey, John, and Paul and Linda, as well as his 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Aug was a kind, loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather with a great sense of humor. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s education and activities in music and sports. His last words to his family were "Love to all, I will miss you, Be happy, Love one another and help those in need." He will be missed.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday January 5, 2023 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. at the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Rd (RT 88), Library, PA, where a blessing service will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. He will then be buried on Friday January 6, at 10:30 a.m. with Full Military Honors in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Rd.
