Donald Hindes Obituary

Donald F. Hindes, age 73, of Bethel Park, PA, passed away suddenly Friday October 18, 2024, in St. Clair Health, surrounded by his loving family. Don was a beloved son of Paul and Gertrude Hindes, and brother of Paul Hindes. He started his life in Meadville, PA, before moving to Bethel Park, where he soon met the love of his life, Leona. They went on their first date after he invited her to a football game by placing a paper football on her desk when they were just 14 year old. They were inseparable throughout high school, college and life. Don married his beloved wife of 53 years during his junior year at Duquesne University. He always displayed his love and commitment to Leona, who kept him on his toes.

Don was an incredible family man and provider, starting his career at Murphy’s Department Store before managing and eventually owning Stone’s Sporting Goods, with his in-laws Edna Mae and Albert Holdsworth. During this time, he became a dad to his son, Adam (Jessica) and daughter, Rebecca (Craig Wright). He volunteered his time to coach and was ever present in their lives; always cheering his kids on or coaching them to be better, whether it was baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, tennis, or golf. Whatever his children needed, he was always there and always supportive.

He became a grandfather in 2011, 2013, and 2024 to Sam, Sidonie and Abigail. He loved being Papa, and his love and support was even greater for them. Again, always present and always there for whatever they needed, and continually talked about them and their accomplishments. He engaged in a lot of their soccer matches and basketball events.

As a brother he was always very close to Paul, and his wife Mary Kay, as well as his sister-in-law Carol, and her husband Larry. Engaging in many family events and as part-time handyman, and overall supportive brother. Don was an incredible uncle and loved by his nieces and nephews: Megan, Kevin, Katie, Kristin, Rachel, Emma, Gabe, Max, Ben, Zuri, Evelyn & Will. Always being a part of their lives, and there for special events and the important moments of their lives. He was always "Uncle Don” to them.

He had a range of interests and enjoyed wood working, tennis, golf, and playing the all-knowing handyman to anyone that needed help. He also enjoyed the holidays and keeping family traditions alive and well. He especially enjoyed the annual family vacation to Avalon, NJ. He loved bodysurfing and boogie boarding with his family. There were times where he simply enjoyed sleeping all day on the beach, no matter the weather. Always the competitor, he loved beating his kids and grandkids at mini golf, and taking them for ice cream after, or going on a late night bike ride to find a good slice of pizza.

Probably his most amazing personal achievement in life, was to log enough walking miles through South Park over the years, that he actually walked around the world. The family can’t think of anyone that has thought about, or was dedicated enough, to achieve that goal.

He was an extremely hard worker, passionate, and committed. He worked as an insurance agent for State Farm for the past 20+ years, and even in his last days in the hospital, was still  concerned about his clients well-being, ensuring his boss took care of them. Don was also a 30 year volunteer for Peters Creek Baptist Church music ministry; working the sound system and also assisting with any handyman work that needed done. Volunteering for the church was his way of giving back, and he loved every minute of it.

Don enriched and touched so many people throughout his life. He will be greatly missed as a Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend. He never wanted to disappoint anyone, his answer was always a “maybe”.
