Donald Sigmund, Sr. Obituary

Donald Robert Sigmund Sr.
March 25, 1940 – June 27, 2026

It is with profound love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Robert Sigmund Sr., who left this world on June 27, 2026, at the age of 86. Don was many things to many people — a problem-solver, a storyteller, a neighbor, a friend — but above all, he was the heartbeat of everyone lucky enough to know him.

Born on March 25, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA, Don came of age with a gift that no engineering degree could teach: the ability to turn any ordinary day into something worth remembering. His open garage door was a standing invitation to the neighborhood, and his driveway became a gathering place where conversations stretched long and laughter came easy.

Don made history as the first graduate of Snowden Township High School to be accepted to Carnegie Tech, where he studied electrical engineering. That intellect took him into the steel industry and around the world. But it was what he did with his mind after retirement in 2000 that may have impressed people most — fixing the unfixable for neighbors, family, and anyone who needed him. The more complex the problem, the better. Don approached his Sudoku puzzle books the same way: starting from the back, where the hardest puzzles lived.

For more than five decades, Don was the unquestioned captain of Sigmund family vacations. What began as a trip to Cape May, NJ in 1970 grew into an annual reunion — a beloved tradition that drew other families into its orbit and made them part of Don's extended world. From the moment the car pulled out of the driveway heading home, Don was already counting down to next year. His spirit will live on at Cape May in every grain of sand, every sunset, every beach umbrella planted in the shore he loved.

Don was a proud Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder for many years, and he was standing beside his brother Tom at Three Rivers Stadium on December 23, 1972 — the day Franco Harris made the Immaculate Reception part of history and legend. That was Don: always present for the moments that mattered.

And if you knew Don, you knew his cigars. The morning smoke in his favorite garage chair. The long conversations over a good cigar with a neighbor, a friend, a stranger who quickly became one. The cigar wasn't just a habit — it was a ritual of connection.

Don is lovingly survived by his wife of 62 years, Joanne Sigmund; his son Donald Sigmund Jr. (Vicki); his brother Thomas Sigmund (Marcy); and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sons Michael Sigmund and Paul Sigmund; his brother William Sigmund; his sisters-in-law Margaret Sigmund and Linda Tarap (Steve); his parents William A. and Catherine Sigmund; and his faithful companions Princess I, Princess II, and Princess III.

In keeping with the way Don lived, his family will celebrate his life at a later date with a backyard picnic at his home — food, raised glasses, shared laughs, and good stories. Because Don made one thing very clear: no sadness. Only gratitude for a life extraordinarily well lived.
