Donald (Don) J. Weiss of Venetia, PA passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026, peacefully, in the house he designed and built for his family 40 years ago.
Don enjoyed a loving marriage to Donna R. Weiss (Huey) until her passing in 2011. He was the proud father of Eric (Caitlin), Ethan (Kimberly), and Jessica, and loving grandfather to Raelan, Hayden, J.J. & Griffin.
Don grew up in the Overbrook neighborhood of Pittsburgh with his parents, Norman and the late Mary “Connie” Weiss and his brother Richard “Rick” (Debbie). He spent much of his childhood exploring the woods and creeks behind the neighborhood, where he would quickly develop his lifelong love of nature and the outdoors.
Don and his family moved to Bethel Park in 1965. In high school, Don helped organize a parish folk group, the New Light Singers, where he developed his love of music and playing guitar. Many members of the group became lifelong friends including one who became his wife. Don and Donna started dating in 1975 and shared a love of music, the outdoors and traveling.
Don inherited his father’s work ethic and love for all things handcrafted. He was a carpenter by trade, and constructed houses for a number of premiere homebuilding contractors in the Pittsburgh area. He took pride in his abilities, and the home he built for his family in Venetia was a source of joy (and sometimes frustration) for him throughout his life.
As he and Donna welcomed and raised their 3 children, he was proudly involved in many of their activities, including coaching basketball, baseball & softball, and serving as Cub Master to Cub Scout Pack 225.
Don held a lifelong interest in photography, one that went hand in hand with his love of outdoors. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time traveling with his friends on photography trips, and was grateful for the camaraderie and shared appreciation for nature.
Through his nearly 27 year journey with cancer, Don constantly remained optimistic and determined. His faith, hope and the loving community that surrounded him and his family kept him going through all of his health challenges. Don’s strength and positive outlook through adversity will be remembered by all, and his trust in God’s plan served him through his final days.
Don was an inspiration and a true example of living life with positivity. He will be missed by all who knew him.
