Geraldine Rossie (Hindman) Velmer, 94, peacefully passed away after a short illness on April 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, family and cherished memories. Her laugh, smile and stylish presence was the rock of her family, a source of unwavering strength and love that will be forever remembered by all who knew her. She was the second of five children born in Newfield, PA, October 29, 1930 to the parents of the late Mackey and Marie (Borella) Hindman. Her siblings are Margaret Orbich of Castle Shannon PA (predeceased), June Thomas of Canonsburg PA, Donald Hindman of Lawrence, PA and Beverly Cozzo of Oakdale, PA.
Gerry graduated from Cecil HS and started work at RCA in radio electronics. At a dance not too long after, she met and married the late Samuel Velmer on July 14, 1951 and celebrated 50 years of marriage with a renewal of vows before Samuel’s passing in 2003. They lived in the same house in Library PA, until she moved to The Residence at Bethel Park for three years. Together they raised four children: Gerald Ross (Deborah) of Bridgewater NJ, Doreen Rae (David Rolince) of Attleboro MA, Marc Samuel (Barbara) of Evansville, IN, and the late Kelly Marie (Scott Armstrong) of South Park, PA. She recently moved from PA to live with her daughter and son-in-law in MA, where she enjoyed their company, eating fine food, watching the birds from her room and playing games after dinner in which she was the winner many times.
Gerry’s greatest joy in life (aside from being a homemaker) were her 7 grandchildren: “Cupcake”- Gillian (Velmer) Hodges, “Pumpkin”- Natalee (Rolince) Pender, “Smiley”- Gregory Velmer, “Muffin”- Julia Velmer, “Blue Eyes”- Ryan Velmer, “Buzz boo”- Nathan Armstrong and “Angel Face”- Hannah Armstrong. She found happiness in the simplest pleasures: cooking, singing, cleaning, reading, doing word searches and watching historical movies. Her favorite pastime was watching Everybody Loves Raymond episodes over and over with many laughs and chuckles. As a proud Pennsylvanian descending from a patriot, she was an avid Steelers football fan, having season tickets that she attended waving the terrible towel with her husband and children. She was an active member of First Bethel UMC with Kings School Kids Daycare and Martha’s Circle until recently, due to her advancing age. She spoke of her church family often with fond memories.
Visitation 5-8pm Thurs., April 17 at David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Rd (RT88), South Park PA. Funeral service 11am Fri., April 18, at First Bethel United Methodist Church, 5901 Library Rd, Bethel Park PA. Entombment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Mausoleum, 301 Curry Hollow Rd, Pgh, PA. Flowers or donations may be made in her memory to First Bethel UMC or Martha’s Circle. A light lunch at the church where family and friends gather for a meal to share memories will be at 1:30pm. www.davidhenneyfuneralhome.com
