Gutrie "Getto" Taboni

On January 22, 2022, Gutrie "Getto"Taboni , of Chartiers Bend Retirement Community, formerly of Southpointe and South Park, passed away at age 103. He is survived by his sister-in-law Angeline Taboni (Dominick), nieces Andrea Schmitt (Dave) and Renée Modrak (Jeff), grandniece Darcy Templeton (Sam) and many godchildren. Also, his brother-in-law, Robert Gualazzi (Nancy) and many close cousins. He was born on April 7, 1918. He grew up in Snowden Township with his Italian-speaking parents Andrea Taboni and Sara Bastianini and remained fluent in Italian. During World War II, he served together with his brother in the Army Air Corps at Camp Pinedale, near Fresno California. He was well known for playing the accordion for the officers club events. After four years in the service, he worked in his parent’s bar and restaurant, the Piney Fork Tavern and played all over Pennsylvania and West Virginia in a four-piece band called Hot and Tots. After his father’s death he maintained ownership of the bar with his mother until her death then his retirement. He was a long-time member of the Library Lions Club. On November 5, 1966 he married Viola Georgiana Gualazzi. They shared the same birth date but “Vi” was 10 years younger. They were married for 53 years until Vi passed away on May 20, 2020. They were the couple that everyone always wanted to emulate. Getto was an avid golfer and enjoyed travelling with Vi and friends in Italy, Europe and other countries. He was long time member of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Library. He was an active member of Monongahela Golf Club for many years until joining the Southpointe Golf Club in 1999 as a charter member. Always quick with a joke or story, Getto was loved by all. He celebrated his 103rd birthday with many friends at Chartiers Bend saying “You can’t beat it, a lively little party”. Visitation Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road (RT 88), Library. Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at noon in St. Joan of Arc Church.
