Hugh Burchinal Humbert, Jr., of Bethel Park, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 17, 2025, age 99. He was born on May 1, 1926 in Georges County, PA. Hugh graduated from Fairchance High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater until 1946. He attended West Virginia University on the GI Bill from 1946 to 1950, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. Hugh began work as a civil engineer for Bethlehem Steel in Harrisburg, Pa. They quickly recognized his unique interpersonal skills and wonderful sense of humor and promoted him to the sales office in Pittsburgh where he worked until his retirement in 1988.
Hugh's love for the Lord led him to serve in the church in many capacities including Chairman of the Deacons in the growing Peters Creek Baptist Church. He also taught Sunday School at the Baptist Home for 25 years. Later, he became a founding member of the God Squad which is responsible for repair and upgrade of areas in the church, including air conditioning for the sanctuary. Perhaps his crowning achievement in life involved his wife, Mary. She was born with a kidney defect which developed into kidney failure in 1967. At the time, the only way to keep her alive was to dialyze her at home, a first in Pittsburgh. Through his wisdom and skill, he was able to keep her alive for 22 years.
Hugh is preceded in death by his wife Mary, his second wife Fran, his infant son Mark, his wonderful daughter Susan and his brother Harold Humbert (Geraldine). He is survived by his son Paul, his grandchildren, Laura, Ross (Michelina), and Marc, his daughter-in-law Marcia, son-in-law Mike McGrady, stepchildren Robin, Doug, and Gary and great-grandchildren Giavanna, Vincenzo, Rolando, Magnus and the late Maxima. Visitation Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road, South Park, PA 15129. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 11:00 am in Peters Creek Baptist Church with Military Honors. A luncheon will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Peters Creek Baptist Church, 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA 15129. www.davidhenneyfuneralhome.com
