In Loving Memory of Samuel Lynn Walton

On July 30, 2026, Samuel Lynn Walton was peacefully reunited at Heaven's gates with God and the love of his life, Annette Walton. Surrounded by the love of his family and the music he loved, Sam departed this life leaving behind a legacy of strength, wisdom, and humility.

Left to carry that legacy are his dear brother, Larry Walton; sister, Cheryl Ericson; beloved children, Laura Hutterer, Robbin Neckerman (John), Sam Walton (Kelly), and Michael Walton; seven grandchildren; and eight beautiful great-grandchildren—a rare blessing that allowed generations of family to know, love, and learn from him.

After attending Waynesburg University, Sam set out on an adventure to California. That year became an unforgettable chapter filled with experiences, friendships, and a deep appreciation for living life to the fullest. Anyone who knew Sam knew he embraced life with enthusiasm.

Returning home to Pittsburgh, a successful career in sales began with various manufacturers before finding his professional home at Newland Associates. In 1974, Sam purchased the company and served as its president until its closing in 2017. Business was never just about sales—it was about people. Lasting friendships were formed with customers, colleagues and manufacturers alike who remained part of his life long after business was done.

Family was always at the center. Unconditional love came naturally to Sam, and small talk simply wasn't his style. Every conversation began with a sincere, "What's news?" because what mattered most was what was happening in your life. No matter the challenge, reassurance was never far behind: "It'll all be okay." Few people possessed the remarkable ability to make others feel as seen, valued, and important like he did. He celebrated, encouraged, and reminded those around him just how proud he was of them. To his family, he was their rock.

Known to many as "Big Sam," respect defined every interaction. Rather than talking down to others, he shared knowledge generously and enriched the lives of everyone around him. Whether coaching football or baseball, the lessons extended well beyond the field. Years later, former players still speak of the profound impact Big Sam had—not only as a coach, but as a mentor who believed in every individual on his team.

Curiosity and craftsmanship shaped much of his free time. He built motorcycles and engines. Hunting remained a lifelong passion that began in childhood alongside his father and brother and continued for decades with treasured friends.

When he bought the beach house memories were made from day one. Days were spent fishing, boating, and exploring the area's rich history with friends and family, all of whom Sam and Terry welcomed with open arms. History fascinated him, particularly the Civil War and the stories woven throughout the Outer Banks. Reading and sharing those stories became one of his greatest joys, and anyone fortunate enough to listen walked away having learned something new.

Someone very close to Sam once described him as a true Renaissance man, and that he truly was. His accomplishments were many, but they were never what defined him. The measure of his life was found in the people he loved, the wisdom he shared, the friendships he built, and the countless lives made better simply because they knew him.

The family invites all who knew and loved Big Sam to remember him not with sadness, but with gratitude—for the conversations, the laughter, the guidance, and the example of a life lived with purpose, integrity, and love. Please join us in celebrating a beautiful and fulfilling life  on Thursday, from 2-8 p.m. at the David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road (RT 88), Library Pa., where a blessing service will be Friday at 10:00 a.m.

May God bless his soul and grant him eternal peace. Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
