Sophie T. (Theros) Pappas

Sophie T. Pappas (Theros), of Upper St. Clair, formerly of Finleyville, on Thursday, April 15,
2021, age 89 passed gently from this life into God’s heavenly kingdom. Beloved wife of 55
years of the late George, loving mother of Leon (Andrea), Deno, Gina, Tom (Lisa) and
Theresa Pappas (Sean), sister of the late Gloria Maras, grandmother of Georgiana (Zach),
Nicole (Logan), Danielle (Connor), Nathaniel, Tessa, Kaylen, Maximos, Julia, Evelyn and
the late Angelica. Godmother to Dr. Michael Medich and Fr. Nicholas Halkias.
Sophie was born in Huron, SD during the height of the depression. She was the daughter of
Greek immigrant parents, Theresa and Mike Theros. In 1950, after graduating from Central
High School in Duluth, MN she joined the clerical staff for Minnesota Power and Light and
married her childhood sweetheart George. Together they raised five children through many
struggles. When Sophie was 46 years old, she suffered a massive stroke and coma that
impaired most of her memory and some vision. The doctors provided little hope of recovery,
however by the grace of God and Sophie’s tenacious spirit she regained her life and lived
another 43 years! Sophie enjoyed playing the piano, baking cakes and cooking. She was
active in Women’s Auxilliary Association of Duluth and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras,
Upper St. Clair Women’s Club, Twelve Holy Apostle Philoptochos Society, Daughters of
Penelope and was an active member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt.
Lebanon. Sophie was a faithful woman who loved Christ and her church. The family is most
grateful to the staff of the Grand Residence and Gateway Hospice (especially Bobie Smith)
for their patient, kind and compassionate care of Sophie. Visitation Monday 10 a.m. - noon
at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Road, Pgh., PA 15228, where a
Funeral Service will be Monday at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the
church. Due to COVID restrictions, we ask that you wear masks and practice social
